Who we are in the Lord's church?

We are every-day ordinary people desiring to be faithful Christians. We seek simply to study and practice the only word of God, the Bible. We are not bound by denominational ties, traditions, doctrines, or organizations. We are not a denomination. We have no creeds or confessions of faith; the Bible alone is our source of faith (Romans 10:17) and authority in matters of faith and worship. We desire to practice simple New Testament Christianity. We desire to be the church that Christ built (Matthew 16:18)--the churches of Christ (Romans 16:16). We "speak where the Bible speaks....and are silent where the Bible is silent, with love in all things".

Does Real Love Hurt?

Many in the world of child abuse prevention have adopted the slogan, "Real Love Shouldn't Hurt". In the context of a child being physically, sexually, or mentally abused, I agree wholeheartedly. Also when speaking of a marital or dating relationship, the same holds true of emotional and physical pain. But, unfortunately, we do find in the realm of some relationships, real love can and does hurt.

We are entering into the "holiday" season, that time of year that most families hold some form of gathering, whether it be a Thanksgiving meal, Christmas party, or other such function. And invariably, someone will become upset or get their feelings hurt. Have you ever asked yourself why this is? If I could figure it out, I would rank right up there with Solomon. God warns us that Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. (Psalms 52:2 ESV) Likewise A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 ESV) We constantly see people having their feelings hurt by these words, and we often never know exactly why. And those of us who care for BOTH parties are hurt by this. Even though we did nothing wrong, we hurt. We hurt for the offended party and their feelings. We hurt for the offending party as well. Often times, folk will feel the need to "take a side", and in doing so, escalate the situation even more. How many of you know, or even been a part of a disagreement that has caused family or friends not to speak for years? It is truly a sad situation. In this case...Real Love Hurts.

Another situation we may find ourselves facing or have faced is the illness and/or death of a loved one. You may find yourself sitting by the bed of someone who is dying a slow death. Pain and anguish are only a small part of the emotions that you feel during this time. We are helpless to do anything for our loved ones. We pray, we cry, we lose sleep. And we hurt. Depending on the closeness of the relationship, we may hurt in a way we never have before. As we watch their life end...Real Love Hurts.

Parents can find themselves watching their children as they grow older make poor choices. You watch as they make life changing mistakes. Some may have legal issues. drugs and alcohol can be involved, as well as other immoral situations. You watch as they leave you, leave the family of God, and strike out into a dangerous and tempestuous world. And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. If it hasn't happened to you, chances are it has another family member, neighbor, or friend. It is gut wrenching, heartbreaking, and exhausting. As you see them head down a road of self destruction...Real Love Hurts.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus came to this earth. He lived, taught, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and did the will of His Father. And all during His earthly ministry He taught one main theme...LOVE! He taught us that God loves Us; "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:16-17 ESV)He loves us; As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. (John 15:9 ESV)And we should love each other;"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (John 15:12 ESV). Not only did He teach us about love....He showed us by His example what the perfect love is. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13 ESV) Jesus was betrayed by one of His own apostles While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I will kiss is the man; seize him." And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" And he kissed him. (Matthew 26:47-49 ESV) He was abused and humiliated Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, (Matthew 26:67 ESV)He was scourged, an ancient Roman beating so terrible we as civilized people can hardly imagine it. The "Passion of the Christ" was graphically accurate in it's depiction of the scourging of Christ. He was punched, mocked, and degraded So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. (Mark 15:15-20 ESV)And why did He do this? Because He showed the Father His love for Him by giving Himself for us! For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father." (John 10:17-18 ESV) And when He died on the cross...Real Love Hurt
