Who we are in the Lord's church?

We are every-day ordinary people desiring to be faithful Christians. We seek simply to study and practice the only word of God, the Bible. We are not bound by denominational ties, traditions, doctrines, or organizations. We are not a denomination. We have no creeds or confessions of faith; the Bible alone is our source of faith (Romans 10:17) and authority in matters of faith and worship. We desire to practice simple New Testament Christianity. We desire to be the church that Christ built (Matthew 16:18)--the churches of Christ (Romans 16:16). We "speak where the Bible speaks....and are silent where the Bible is silent, with love in all things".

We all need somebody!

Life can be challenging. Every day it seems we see, hear, or read about another disaster in our world; the Haitian, Argentinean and Turkey earthquakes; famine in various parts of the world; and all the other natural disasters . Then we have the man made disasters; the failing economy, unemployment, the lack of confidence in our elected leaders, and evil and violence that is permeating our society. Just watching TV, listening to the radio, or reading a newspaper can be so depressing.

Even in our own church family, we are not immune to being “in the world”. Look at our prayer list and see all of our family and friends that have disasters in their lives, both great and small. And what may not seem like a disaster to us can be a major event in the life of another. But what should we do when we or our families and friends experience disaster? Let’s look at what God’s Word says:

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:25-34 ESV)

Jesus tells us to trust in God, and He will take care of us. He loves us. He sent His Son to save us from the greatest disaster we can ever face. That is a life without salvation! But what else does Jesus tell us?

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35 ESV)

We need Jesus in our lives, and we need each other. He loves you, and so do I. Aren’t you glad He does? And I hope you are glad that I do too!
