Whenever I would have an aching back, my lovely Laura would often offer to massage my sore back and shoulders, and I can’t ever remember turning her down. She would begin to rub my shoulders, slowly, and firmly. Then she would rub my shoulders faster and lighter. That's when I thought, "Oh no, I know what that means." Rubbing my shoulders faster and lighter meant that she was getting ready to quit. My wife gave me a short-term back rub when I was hoping for a long-term massage.
Recently, I heard that a lot of the money donated to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti had not been distributed. At first, that really bothered me. A newscaster explained the reason. He said that many of the organizations didn't distribute all of the money because they needed to be prepared to help over a long period of time, not just at first. It will be way too easy for many of us to forget about those earthquake victims. It will take many years for them to rebuild. If you look at the news, you hardly hear anything about the situation in Haiti, but the devastation is still there. Most have gone back to their every-day business and forgotten about them. They want to know if we really care.
Caring in the short term is easy. Caring over the long term is more difficult. When it comes to serving others, are we short term “back rub” or long term “massage”? Many of us will get involved in special events, and are the first to respond to a special need within our family or the community. What about caring for a person or a family, who is going through a long spell of difficult circumstances? Are we willing to stick it out and help them over a long period of time? We like the short term help better. It is easier, and takes the edge off of our guilt without costing us too much time or effort.
We must remember that people really don't "care" about how much we "know," until they "know how much we care." They don't want us to care about them just long enough to get rid of our guilt feelings. They want to know if we really care over the long term.
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him.(1 John 3:16-19 ESV)
God is love. And He loves you. Isn’t love wonderful? I love you too.

Who we are in the Lord's church?
We are every-day ordinary people desiring to be faithful Christians. We seek simply to study and practice the only word of God, the Bible. We are not bound by denominational ties, traditions, doctrines, or organizations. We are not a denomination. We have no creeds or confessions of faith; the Bible alone is our source of faith (Romans 10:17) and authority in matters of faith and worship. We desire to practice simple New Testament Christianity. We desire to be the church that Christ built (Matthew 16:18)--the churches of Christ (Romans 16:16). We "speak where the Bible speaks....and are silent where the Bible is silent, with love in all things".

The Truth or a Lie...The choice is yours
There is a never ending stream of information in our world today. And all things fall into one of two categories…the truth or a lie. Jesus tells us “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32 ESV) Unfortunately if we listen to enough lies; we can accept those lies and start telling them to ourselves as truth. But we know where all lies come from; “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44 ESV)
Let us look at some common lies people tell themselves that can be overcome from God’s Word.
“God is out to get me” – Yes He is, because He loves you.
“God is disappointed in me”- He doesn’t expect us to be perfect, just believe and trust in Him.
“God can’t use me”- God can use anyone. Living a faithful life isn’t about being talented, but about being willing to do His will and letting God use you for His glory.
“God doesn’t hear me”- He hears every word that comes out of your mouth, and even those that don’t. And He cares. And will answer prayers if you will pray them.
“God doesn’t know me”- Actually, God knows more about you than you do. He knows EVERYTHING about you. And He wants you to be more like His Son Jesus and Him every day and in every way.
“I will never be enough”- Yes, you will never be enough by yourself. But God is enough. Whatever is lacking in you, God will fulfill. Wherever you are weak, He is strong. When we recognize our shortcomings, it is an opportunity for God’s greatness to be shown by giving us grace.
“I am in control of my own destiny”- Yes you are. You get to choose who you will give your life to; God or Satan. These are the only choices available to mankind. If you choose to follow God’s plan you will be placing your life into the hands of the One who truly loves you!
“I can’t hear God’s voice”- Then you must be too distracted to hear Him. Spend time in His Word, and in prayer. All you have to do is slow down and listen.
“I’m not good enough for God to love me, and I don’t know if I ever can be”- God’s love is not conditional on your goodness, but because of His goodness and your repentance. God loves you even when you aren’t good. But His love makes you good. Absolutely nothing can diminish God’s great love for you, but your disobedience can separate you from the effects of His love in your life.
“I will never going to be free”- Yes you will, if you depend on God’s unlimited power instead of your own limited abilities, He can give you freedom in your life by helping you overcome any problem in your life.
God’s own Son Jesus tells us: “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11 ESV) God loves us so much that "that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17 ESV) And we have this promise: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 ESV) These are all truths from God’s Word. It is up to you. I believe His word; I know He loves me and you. I love you too.

We all need somebody!
Life can be challenging. Every day it seems we see, hear, or read about another disaster in our world; the Haitian, Argentinean and Turkey earthquakes; famine in various parts of the world; and all the other natural disasters . Then we have the man made disasters; the failing economy, unemployment, the lack of confidence in our elected leaders, and evil and violence that is permeating our society. Just watching TV, listening to the radio, or reading a newspaper can be so depressing.
Even in our own church family, we are not immune to being “in the world”. Look at our prayer list and see all of our family and friends that have disasters in their lives, both great and small. And what may not seem like a disaster to us can be a major event in the life of another. But what should we do when we or our families and friends experience disaster? Let’s look at what God’s Word says:
"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:25-34 ESV)
Jesus tells us to trust in God, and He will take care of us. He loves us. He sent His Son to save us from the greatest disaster we can ever face. That is a life without salvation! But what else does Jesus tell us?
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35 ESV)
We need Jesus in our lives, and we need each other. He loves you, and so do I. Aren’t you glad He does? And I hope you are glad that I do too!

He’s not here
If you look around this morning you will find that Laura, Tori and I aren’t here. We are in Gallatin this weekend visiting Laura’s parents and our brothers and sisters in Christ there. But know that you are in my prayers and thoughts as we worship God there while you worship Him here. And we will be home tonight and look forward to seeing you this coming week. We always remember these words at times like this: “and Mizpah, for he said, "The LORD watch between you and me, when we are out of one another's sight.” (Genesis 31:49 ESV)
But I want you to focus on someone else who said “He’s not here” this morning. I call your remembrance to:
“But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise." (Luke 24:1-7 ESV)
It is because “He was not there“that we are here today. We worship and serve a risen Savior! Just as if it is His will, I will be coming back to Willow tonight and we see you all again; Jesus tells us He is coming back too. And in that promise we find the hope to continue on, no matter what the world can throw at us. We sing “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness”; “What can wash away my sin….what can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus” and “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow”.
My love for you grows more and more each day. Willow is now home for us, and will continue to be for as long as His will is being done. Just as Paul, I too “give thanks to my God always for you” (1 Corinthians 1:4 ESV)
Can hardly wait until I see you all again. He loves you and I do too.
